Oklahoma Board of Regents to Vote on $30 Million Memorial Stadium Renovation
The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents will vote next week on a plan to authorize up to $30 million for the next phase of renovations to Memorial Stadium, potentially marking the final major project overseen by outgoing Athletic Director Joe Castiglione.
According to an agenda published today, the regents are expected to approve the design development phase and authorize preparation of construction documents, as well as negotiate with Manhattan Construction Company for At-Risk Construction Management Services. The project, part of a larger Stadium Master Plan implemented in 2014, focuses on rebuilding and redeveloping the west side of the stadium, enhancing gameday facilities, and improving the overall fan experience. This latest investment brings the total project cost to an expected $450 million. The renovations are crucial as the Sooners prepare to compete in the Southeastern Conference.
The planned improvements include the addition of 47 suites, 64 loge boxes seating approximately 280 people, and 4,000 new club seats, alongside six club/lounge spaces. A significantly expanded press box – which officials say lags behind other SEC venues – and updated lighting and sound systems are also included in the plans. Major construction is slated to begin after the 2027 season. Since 2002, FlintCo has completed over eight phases of construction at the stadium, totaling more than $235 million in costs. You can find more information about the stadium’s history and previous renovations on the official Sooner Sports website.
In addition to the stadium upgrades, the board will also consider renaming L. Dale Mitchell Park to Kimrey Family Stadium, recognizing the Kimrey family’s over $25 million in contributions to OU athletics, including a recent $15.1 million donation for a new clubhouse, premium seating, and a performance center for the baseball team. University President Joe Harroz will also recommend ranking construction candidates for the baseball stadium expansion and renovations, estimated at $41.7 million. Officials stated that the Mitchell family has fully supported the renaming and a L. Dale Mitchell Plaza will be established within the new facility.
The regents will formally vote on these proposals at their meeting next week, after which negotiations for a guaranteed maximum price for construction will begin.
