Bucharest mayoral candidate Makaveli announced today he is withdrawing from the race and endorsing Anca alexandrescu,a move framed as a call for Romanian unity ahead of the December 7th elections. The decision comes as recent polling indicates a slight decline in Makaveli’s support, though he maintains a considerable following-nearly 420,000-on TikTok, highlighting the platform’s increasing role in Romanian political campaigns. Leaders from the AUR party, including George Simion, have already publicly lauded the move as beneficial to national cohesion.

Makaveli Steps Down in Bucharest Mayoral Race, Endorses Rival

Makaveli, a rising political figure known for his strong social media presence, announced his withdrawal from the Bucharest mayoral race, throwing his support behind Anca Alexandrescu. He framed the decision as a call for unity among Romanians. “I want to convey to them that this isn’t about division, but about unity,” Makaveli stated. “Because we are all Romanians, I believe we need to come together when it comes to this thing, what is called the Romanian people. Therefore, I announce my withdrawal from the candidacy, in favor of Ms. Anca Alexandrescu and in favor of the Romanian people. I will continue the fight, so that young people today do not end up like me, in a different life situation.”

The candidate emphasized his commitment to addressing economic hardship, stating, “I’m not interested in walking on a two-million-euro pavement when I don’t have money to send my children to school. Poverty has always been covered with glitter.” He described witnessing firsthand the struggles of everyday citizens, adding, “I’ve been to many areas, I’ve seen children and the elderly, oh the things they’ve gone through. I know what it’s like to have nothing and no one offering you a bread roll when you’re hungry.” Makaveli officially endorsed Anca Alexandrescu, calling it “a gift to the people of Bucharest,” and acknowledging it wasn’t an easy decision.

George Simion Reacts to Makaveli’s Withdrawal

George Simion, leader of the AUR party, reacted to the news on Facebook, congratulating Zidaru on his decision.

“Congratulations Makaveli for withdrawing in favor of Anca Alexandrescu! The unity of the Romanian people is the only solution!” Simion wrote in his post.

Recent polls show a dip in Makaveli’s electoral support, falling from 5% in October to 4% in the latest data. Despite the decline, he remains a recognizable figure, particularly due to his significant following on TikTok, where he has nearly 420,000 followers. This demonstrates the growing influence of social media in Romanian politics. Zidaru first gained prominence after the 2024 presidential elections were annulled, when he actively supported Călin Georgescu’s campaign online.
