Former Botev Plovdiv captain Ivelin Popov has confirmed his intention to retire from professional football this summer. The attacking midfielder announced his decision to step away from the pitch in an interview with Russian outlet “RB Sport,” revealing aspirations to transition into a sporting director role.
The 38-year-old veteran currently plays for Arda, and previously had stints with five Russian clubs – Spartak Moscow, Kuban, Rostov, Rubin, and Sochi – during a distinguished career.
“I am definitely finishing this summer,” Popov stated. “I am taking my coaching courses, but I would like to try myself as a sporting director in the future. Of course, I would be interested in working at Spartak. I am ready to consider the possibility. I know the environment, I am familiar with the fans’ mentality, and it would be wonderful for me if such an offer were made.”
Popov’s announcement marks the end of an era for the Bulgarian international, who has been a prominent figure in both domestic and international football. His potential move into a directorial position could see him remain involved in the game he loves, leveraging his extensive experience and knowledge.
