Rental Car Owner Sentenced for Blackmailing Idol Couple
A rental car company owner was sentenced to eight months in prison yesterday for blackmailing a female idol with dashcam footage of her private moments with a male idol.
Judge Gong Woo Jin delivered the sentence on October 18, also including a two-year probation period and 120 hours of community service for the defendant, identified only as “A.” The case began in February of last year when “A” rented a van to the female idol and subsequently discovered footage on the vehicle’s dashcam depicting intimate activity between her and a male idol. “A” then attempted to extort money from the female idol, sending a text message questioning her actions and threatening exposure, referencing the male idol’s group by name.
According to court records, “A” initially demanded half the purchase price of the van – 47 million won (approximately $33,058) – and continued to threaten the release of the footage even after receiving two payments. The victim ultimately paid a total of 9.793 million won (approximately $6,888) in three installments. This case highlights the growing concerns surrounding privacy violations and the exploitation of individuals in the entertainment industry. Similar incidents have prompted calls for stronger legal protections for celebrities, as detailed by Human Rights Watch.
While the judge acknowledged “A” had admitted to the crime, expressed remorse, and returned a portion of the extorted funds, they also noted the defendant was already on probation at the time of the offense. The incident underscores the importance of data privacy and responsible use of surveillance technology, a topic frequently discussed in the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s work.
Authorities stated they will monitor “A’s” compliance with the terms of their probation and community service.
