A 50-year-old man in Thailand recently received a stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis after experiencing six months of persistent diarrhea, a case highlighting the critical importance of early detection and medical evaluation. The patient’s initial dismissal of symptoms as dietary changes delayed treatment, underscoring how easily concerning signs can be overlooked. Physicians are using this case-detailed by Dr. Chen Ping-Hsien-to stress that changes in bowel habits and unexplained weight loss should prompt immediate attention, especially given rising rates of the disease linked to lifestyle and environmental factors.
A 50-year-old man’s persistent diarrhea, lasting six months, led to a shocking diagnosis: stage 3 colorectal cancer. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of paying attention to even subtle changes in bodily functions and seeking prompt medical evaluation.
The case came to light through Dr. Chen Ping-Hsien, a physician specializing in liver, gallbladder, and digestive system health, who discussed it on a health program. The patient experienced frequent, watery bowel movements – four to five times daily – which significantly impacted his ability to work at a construction site and caused friction with colleagues.
Initially, the man attributed his symptoms to changes in his diet, specifically a decrease in alcohol consumption coupled with increased intake of tea and coffee, and therefore delayed seeking medical attention. This highlights how easily concerning symptoms can be dismissed as lifestyle-related, potentially delaying crucial diagnosis and treatment.
However, as time progressed, the patient experienced an alarming weight loss, dropping from 77 kilograms (approximately 170 pounds) to 52 kilograms (approximately 115 pounds). Concerned family members finally convinced him to undergo medical testing.
Blood tests revealed anemia, with a hemoglobin level of just 9 grams per deciliter – significantly lower than the normal range of 13–18 grams per deciliter for men. He was also found to have microcytic anemia, an unusual finding for a man not following a vegetarian diet.
Based on these results, doctors recommended further investigation, including a colonoscopy and a computed tomography (CT) scan. These tests confirmed a diagnosis of stage 3 colorectal cancer, necessitating surgery and chemotherapy. Fortunately, the patient’s overall condition has since improved, and the frequent bowel movements have subsided.
Dr. Chen noted that the patient had several risk factors for colorectal cancer, including age over 50, a history of smoking and alcohol use, and exposure to PM2.5 air pollution. These factors collectively increase an individual’s susceptibility to the disease.
“Changes in bowel habits and unexplained weight loss are warning signs that should never be ignored,” Dr. Chen emphasized. “Prompt medical evaluation is crucial.”
For younger individuals and those with low risk, fecal occult blood tests may be sufficient for screening. However, for those over 45, a colonoscopy is strongly recommended by physicians as a vital screening tool.
A gastroenterologist explained that early-stage colorectal cancer often presents with subtle or no noticeable pain. However, individuals should be vigilant for symptoms such as:
- Blood or mucus in the stool
- Alternating diarrhea and constipation
- Narrower stools than usual
- Chronic diarrhea or frequent constipation
- Unintentional weight loss and anemia
- A feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
Public health experts add that several factors contribute to the high rates of colorectal cancer in Thailand and other countries, including a family history of the disease or polyps, obesity, smoking, a diet high in grilled, fried, and processed foods, and high consumption of red meat.
Increasing the intake of vegetables, fruits, and fiber is recommended, along with reducing sedentary behavior, which is also a significant risk factor for the disease.
