After a month-long search, Polish football club Legia Warsaw is set to appoint marek Papszun as their new head coach, seeking to revitalize their season in the Ekstraklasa [[2]]. The move comes as Legia currently holds a mid-table position and aims to climb the standings under the highly-regarded Papszun, though a contract clause initially threatened to delay the appointment. Papszun is expected to take the helm Monday, wiht his first match scheduled thursday in the UEFA Europa Conference League against Sparta Prague.
Warsaw’s Legia are poised to name Marek Papszun as their new head coach, ending a month-long search for a permanent replacement for Edward Iordanescu. Legia currently sits in the mid-table of Poland’s Ekstraklasa, and the appointment of Papszun, a highly-regarded manager, signals an intent to climb the standings.
Interim manager Inaki Astiz will oversee Saturday’s league match against Lechia Gdańsk, but all indications point to that being his final game in charge. Sources confirm Papszun is expected to begin work at Legia on Monday and will make his debut in the UEFA Europa Conference League against Sparta Prague on Thursday.
Reports began circulating earlier this week regarding Legia’s interest in Papszun. Journalist Łukasz Olkowicz first mentioned Papszun’s name in connection with the vacant position on the “Ofensywni” podcast. The following day, Tomasz Włodarczyk of meczyki.pl reported that “one of our sources claims that an agreement is close and Papszun is ready to change clubs.” according to the report.
Papszun Set for Sparta Prague Debut
According to sources, the deal is nearing completion with only final formalities remaining. Legia informed Papszun’s current club, Raków Częstochowa, of their interest last week. Papszun’s contract with Raków includes a clause allowing him to pursue other opportunities if presented with a suitable offer.
That clause has been the subject of legal discussion in recent days, specifically regarding whether it applies to offers from clubs within the Ekstraklasa. This uncertainty delayed Papszun’s official appointment, despite his readiness to join the club earlier in the week. The delay explains why Legia has taken so long to name a new manager, despite initial plans to announce the appointment on Monday or Tuesday.
The appointment was delayed by a week, but it’s now confirmed that Papszun will arrive at Legia with five members of his coaching staff, some of whom will join him from Raków Częstochowa.
The 51-year-old Papszun was previously linked with Legia in 2021 during a period of crisis for the club. Then-owner Dariusz Mioduski publicly stated his desire to hire Papszun, saying, “I can confirm that we want to reach an agreement with the coach and his staff. If it is not possible to hire him in the winter, we are ready to wait until the end of the season. I believe that Marek Papszun, with the right working conditions, which exist at Legia, is currently the best candidate to develop our team in the coming years. I am convinced that the charisma, knowledge, and experience of coach Papszun will positively combine with the club’s philosophy.”
Despite reaching an agreement at the time, Papszun ultimately did not join Legia, with then-sporting director Jacek Zieliński opting to hire Kosta Runjaic. This move represents a significant step in Papszun’s career, given his publicly expressed affection for Legia.
Legia currently occupies 11th place in the Ekstraklasa table with 17 points, 12 points behind league leader Górnik Zabrze, though they have played one fewer match. The team also holds a four-point advantage over the relegation zone.
