The disappearance of a young man in southern France has concluded with a shocking confession: his partner has admitted to his murder. The case, which initially sparked a widespread search, highlights the often-hidden issue of domestic violence and its tragic consequences.

Jean-Baptiste Moutassie, 29, was reported missing on April 18, 2024, after failing to arrive at work with a colleague in Mazamet, in the Tarn department. Moutassie, originally from Lyon and of Cameroonian descent, had moved to the area two years prior to be closer to his partner’s family and raise their 8-month-old daughter, according to La Dépêche du Midi.

A public search was launched, culminating in a white-candle march on June 1, 2024, organized by friends and family. Notably absent from the march were Moutassie’s partner and her family.

Investigation Escalates

The investigation took a significant turn when the case was transferred from the Castres prosecutor’s office to the criminal pole of Toulouse. Investigators began to re-examine the circumstances surrounding Moutassie’s disappearance and his relationship with his partner, who had initially reported him missing, claiming he had left with all of his belongings.

Confession and Recovery of Remains

On December 9, 2025, the partner, aged 32, along with her father, 61, and mother, were taken into custody for questioning. During the interrogation, the woman confessed to killing Moutassie with a rifle, inflicting wounds to his chest and head. She further stated that, with the assistance of her father, they disposed of his body by throwing it from the Poussarou bridge, approximately 50 kilometers from Mazamet, into a river within a rugged landscape. Police subsequently recovered remains matching the description of the victim, guided by the father’s statements.

The woman justified her actions by alleging that Moutassie had subjected her to psychological and physical abuse. She has been charged with murder, while her father faces charges of concealing a body and altering a crime scene.

France 3 reports that the partner has been placed in pre-trial detention, the father is under judicial supervision, and the mother, who did not participate in the disposal of the body, was released from custody.
