Mali’s Defense Minister Sadio Camara Killed in Coordinated Rebel Attack Mali’s Defense Minister General Sadio Camara has been killed in a suicide truck bombing at his residence near the capital Bamako, according to his family and multiple news outlets. The attack occurred on Saturday in the garrison town of Kati, a heavily fortified military location about 15 kilometers northwest of Bamako where interim President Assimi Goita also resides. Camara’s family confirmed his death and reported that at least three family members were also killed in the assault. The bombing was part of a wave of coordinated attacks carried out across Mali by jihadist militants affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and separatist Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front. Fighting was reported simultaneously in Gao and Kidal in the north, as well as in the central cities of Sevare and Mopti. Russian mercenaries hired by Mali’s military agreed to withdraw from Kidal after two days of clashes, the separatist group said. Meanwhile, junta leader Gen Assimi Goita was moved to a safe location after his home was targeted in the violence. Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel programme at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Mali, told the BBC the incident appeared to be the “largest coordinated jihadist attack on Mali for years.” Camara was a central figure in Mali’s military government that seized power after back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021. He had been widely seen as one of the most influential figures in the ruling establishment and a possible future leader of the country. His death represents a major blow to Mali’s armed forces as the country continues to battle insurgencies by groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, alongside separatist Tuareg forces seeking a breakaway ethnic Tuareg state in the north. The European Union condemned the attack in strong terms, calling it a violation of Mali’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
