Medical Helicopter Crashes on California Highway, Three Critically Injured
A medical helicopter crashed onto Highway 50 in Sacramento, California today, leaving a pilot, a nurse, and a paramedic in critical condition, according to officials.
The incident occurred just after 7 p.m. local time on the eastbound side of the highway, near UC Davis Medical Center, from which the REACH Air Medical helicopter had departed minutes earlier. There were no patients onboard at the time of the crash. Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty confirmed the three crew members are currently hospitalized.
“It’s mind blowing that no one on the highway was injured,” stated Captain Justin Sylvia, spokesperson for the Sacramento Fire Department, noting the helicopter came down in the middle of the roadway. Footage circulating on social media appears to show the helicopter briefly hovering before impacting the ground in a cloud of smoke. Air medical services play a vital role in providing rapid transport to trauma centers, and disruptions to these services can significantly impact patient care. Global Medical Response, REACH’s parent company, confirmed they are investigating the accident and assessing the condition of the crew.
