A fresh analysis from the German Technical Inspection Association (TÜV), detailed in the 2026 AUTO BILD TÜV Report, reveals a surprising leader in long-term vehicle dependability: a classic German manufacturer.

The long-term reliability list is topped by Mercedes-Benz models, particularly the B-Class, M/GLE series, and A-Class, demonstrating exceptional performance within the 10- to 11-year-old vehicle segment – as reported by Bild. This indicates a lower incidence of significant defects during annual TÜV inspections, even with substantial mileage. Audi secured the second position, with models like the A3, Q5, A4/A5, and Q3 also achieving strong results. Toyota rounded out the top three, confirming that Japanese engineering continues to deliver longevity alongside German automotive standards.

Korean Used Cars at the Bottom of the List

The ranking methodology included only brands with at least three different models represented, ensuring an objective assessment based on real-world failure rates. The average failure rate (percentage of vehicles failing TÜV inspections) for the best 10- to 11-year-old cars was approximately 22.9%, with an average mileage of 131,000 km. This data provides valuable insight for consumers considering a used vehicle purchase, as it highlights models with a proven track record of reliability.

Interestingly, Volkswagen and Skoda landed in the middle of the pack, while BMW completed the Top 10. Brands such as Renault, Kia, and Hyundai were found at the lower finish of the rankings.
