Meta is moving forward with a significant restructuring effort, planning to lay off approximately 8,000 employees and halt around 6,000 planned hires, according to multiple Italian business publications.
The workforce reductions, which would affect about 10% of Meta’s global staff, are part of a broader strategy to improve operational efficiency and sharpen the company’s focus on artificial intelligence development.
Reports indicate the layoffs are expected to begin in May, aligning with Meta’s renewed push to compete more effectively in the AI sector against rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
In addition to the job cuts, Meta has reportedly begun monitoring employee computer activity, including mouse movements and keystrokes, as part of efforts to gather data for training its AI systems.
The company confirmed the initiative is intended to support AI model development, though specific details about how the collected data will be used have not been disclosed.
These actions come amid ongoing investments in AI, including the recent launch of Muse Spark, Meta’s first major AI model developed under its fresh Superintelligence Labs unit led by Alexandr Wang.
