mexico City’s Metro system experienced widespread disruptions Thursday morning as authorities preemptively closed multiple stations ahead of both the annual Revolution Day parade and a planned presentation by Generation Z activists. the closures, impacting numerous lines and forcing commuters to seek alternative routes, are part of a security plan implemented by the city’s Secretariat of Citizen Security. officials are urging travelers to plan ahead and anticipate meaningful delays in the city center.

Multiple stations on the Mexico City Metro system were closed Thursday morning, disrupting service ahead of the city’s Revolution Day parade and a planned demonstration by a youth activist group. The closures, which began with two stations and expanded throughout the morning, are impacting several key lines.

The Sistema de Transporte Colectivo (STC), the city’s metro authority, announced the initial closures of the Zócalo and Allende stations on Line 2. Trains are bypassing these stations and not stopping to pick up or drop off passengers.

Shortly before 7 a.m. local time, the Metro announced additional closures, including the Garibaldi station on Lines 8 and B.

Six Additional Stations Shut Down

Authorities later announced the closure of six more stations, adding to the growing disruptions for commuters. The affected stations are:

  • Isabel la Católica, Line 1.
  • Salto del Agua, Lines 1 and 8.
  • Balderas, Lines 1 and 3.
  • Bellas Artes, Lines 2 and 8.
  • San Antonio Abad, Line 2
  • San Juan de Letrán, Line 8

The closures come as Mexico City prepares for its annual Revolution Day parade, which this year will follow a modified route starting at the Zócalo and heading towards the Monumento a la Revolución.

Pino Suárez, Revolución, and Hidalgo Also Closed

Metro Director Adrián Rubalcava announced the closure of the Pino Suárez station, which connects Lines 1 and 2. “At this time, the Pino Suárez station on Lines 1 and 2 is closed until further notice,” he said in a social media post.

“In this moment we are closing Pino Suárez station of Lines 1 and 2, until further notice,” he noted through his social networks.

Rubalcava later added that service was also suspended at the Hidalgo station (Lines 2 and 3) and Revolución station on Line 2.

“At these points, trains will not pick up or drop off passengers,” Rubalcava Suárez warned, asking for the understanding of users.

“I appreciate the understanding of those who use the system and invite you to stay tuned for official updates to plan your trips,” he posted on X.

The station closures are part of a larger security and mobility plan implemented by the Secretariat of Citizen Security to protect the Revolution Day parade.

Alternative Routes Available

For passengers affected by the Zócalo and Allende closures, the STC suggested using the Pino Suárez station on Lines 1 and 2, Isabel la Católica on Line 1, Salto del Agua on Lines 1 and 8, San Juan de Letrán on Line 8, and Bellas Artes on Lines 1 and 8 as alternative options to access the historic city center.

“These are options to access the area of the Historic Center,” the STC said in a statement.

Passengers traveling to the area can also use Lagunilla on Line B, Guerrero on Line 3, and Bellas Artes on Lines 2 and 8.

Travelers Urged to Plan Ahead

The STC is advising passengers to plan their trips in advance and allow for extra travel time.

Thursday’s events in the historic center include the Revolution Day parade and a planned march by Generation Z activists.

Generation Z March Planned

A march by the Generation Z activist group is scheduled for Thursday, starting at the Angel of Independence and ending at the Zócalo. The planned route includes Avenida Paseo de la Reforma towards Avenida Juárez and then along Eje Central to Calle 5 de Mayo and the Zócalo.

Organizers have also announced a possible second route starting at the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s central library mural and heading towards the Rector’s Tower around 10:00 a.m.

The demonstrators are calling for improvements in areas such as security, combating corruption, increased opportunities, justice, and an end to institutional violence.

The simultaneous events are expected to cause traffic closures and detours throughout the city center.
