A wave of arson attacks is disrupting transportation and heightening security concerns across Michoacán state, with multiple vehicle fires reported since Saturday. The incidents, concentrated along key commercial highways, come amid ongoing cartel violence in the region, where six soldiers were killed by a bomb explosion earlier this year [[1]]. Authorities are investigating whether the coordinated attacks represent a purposeful attempt to destabilize the state following the recent unveiling of a new security plan [[2]], and in the wake of escalating political violence including the murder of a local mayor [[3]].
MORELIA, Mich., November 17, 2025 – Reports of vehicle fires and road blockades are emerging from several municipalities in Michoacán state, adding to ongoing unrest in the region. The incidents, which began Saturday, are impacting travel and raising security concerns across the state.
The disturbances initially centered around the communities of Sanabria and El Tigre, along the Morelia-Quiroga highway. Authorities are now investigating a series of arson attacks targeting trucks and trailers in areas surrounding Zamora and La Piedad.
The first reported incident occurred on the La Piedad-Guadalajara federal highway, near the Bafar company, where a tractor-trailer was reportedly stolen and then set ablaze. Shortly after, two more trucks were torched on the road leading to Penjamillo, and another near Cerritos Blancos, causing significant traffic delays.
Additional reports indicate that vehicles were also burned in Zamora, specifically on the eastern bypass, as well as in Chavinda and the municipality of Ecuandureo. The coordinated nature of the attacks suggests a deliberate effort to disrupt transportation and potentially exert pressure on local authorities.
The escalating violence underscores the ongoing challenges to security in Michoacán, a state frequently affected by cartel activity. The motives behind the arson attacks remain unclear as investigations continue.
