Morocco kicked off their campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Comoros on Tuesday at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, in front of the Crown Prince of Morocco.

The Atlas Lions broke the deadlock in the 55th minute through Ibrahim Diaz, capitalizing on a long ball into the box from Sofyan Amrabat. Nصير مزراوي controlled the pass before laying it off for Diaz to fire past the Comoros goalkeeper.

Morocco doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Anass Salah-Eddine delivered a stunning pass to Ayoub El Kaabi, who finished with a beautiful back-heel flick.

The home side had an early opportunity to take the lead, but Sofiane Rahimi saw his 11th-minute penalty saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yanick Pandor. Pandor proved to be a standout performer, denying several attempts from Walid Regragui’s team, who could have extended their lead further.

The win gives Morocco, aiming for their second title since 1976, three crucial points in Group A, which also includes Mali and Zambia. Comoros, meanwhile, remain without a point.

With this result, host nations continue their impressive streak of not losing opening matches, extending it to 15 consecutive editions of the tournament. Burkina Faso was the last host nation to fall in their opening game, back in 1998.
