Switzerland has affirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis for resolving the regional dispute over Western Sahara.

The position was expressed in a joint communication adopted by Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during Bourita’s working visit to Bern on April 24, 2026.

In the same document, Switzerland welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, stating that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a highly feasible solution.

Switzerland also reiterated its backing for the central role of the United Nations and the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy in the process.

The Swiss endorsement aligns with the growing international consensus generated by King Mohammed VI’s advocacy for Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and the autonomy proposal.

This development was reported by MAP, the Moroccan news agency.
