Living Life on ‘Hard Mode’: MrBeast Opens Up About Lifelong Battle With Crohn’s Disease

Jimmy Donaldson, the global content creator known as MrBeast, has revealed the grueling physical reality of living with Crohn’s disease, a chronic condition he has managed since the age of 15. In a candid discussion on the podcast The Diary Of A CEO, hosted by Steven Bartlett, Donaldson described the experience of navigating the world with the incurable illness as “living life on hard mode.”

The diagnosis came during Donaldson’s adolescence and brought immediate, drastic changes to his health and aspirations. Within a few months of being diagnosed, his weight plummeted from 190 lbs (86 kg) to 139 lbs (63 kg) because his body could no longer effectively process nutrients. This sudden loss of muscle mass forced him to abandon his dreams of playing college baseball, a turning point that eventually redirected his energy toward building his digital empire.

Understanding Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. It is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues. While the inflammation can occur anywhere from the mouth to the anus, it most commonly affects the end of the small intestine and the beginning of the colon.

For Donaldson, the symptoms are often agonizing. He described the recurring physical pain as feeling as though “someone is constantly stabbing you in the stomach.” This condition not only impacts nutrition and energy levels but can fundamentally alter a patient’s daily functioning.

The Treatment Trade-Off: Managing Inflammation vs. Immunity

Now 27, Donaldson relies on a biologic medication called Remicade to retain the inflammation under control. While the therapy is essential for preventing the immune system from attacking his gastrointestinal tract, it comes with a significant systemic cost.

Donaldson explained that the treatment essentially “annihilates” his natural defenses to stop the internal attack. This state of suppressed immunity has left him highly susceptible to opportunistic infections. He revealed that he has contracted COVID-19 six times, along with bouts of the flu, shingles, and severe skin rashes.

The struggle to balance disease management with overall immune health is a common challenge for those with chronic autoimmune conditions. By sharing these details, Donaldson highlights the invisible burdens carried by millions of people living with chronic illnesses, emphasizing that resilience often exists alongside significant physical suffering.
