MTSU Women’s Soccer Falls to New Mexico State in Conference USA Match
The Middle Tennessee State University women’s soccer team (8-5-3, 3-2-1 CUSA) suffered a 2-1 defeat against New Mexico State University (2-11-3, 1-2-3 CUSA) yesterday evening in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The Aggies, entering the match as one of the lower-ranked teams in Conference USA, secured their first league win of the season with goals from Meredith Scott in the 33rd minute and Jaiden McClellan in the 72nd minute. MTSU’s lone goal came from graduate student Ximena Jauregui in the 68th minute. Head Coach Aston Rhoden noted the team’s struggles with consistency, stating, “We just had to get back to the basics… we were kind of really individualistic.”
The match was marked by a high number of fouls, with MTSU being called for 12 throughout the game, which Rhoden believed disrupted the flow of play. Senior defender Emma Brown expressed the team’s disappointment, saying, “We let up 2 silly goals and couldn’t just bounce back from it.” This loss impacts MTSU’s standing in the competitive Conference USA standings.
The Blue Raiders will conclude their home schedule on October 19th at 1 p.m. against the University of Texas at El Paso, also a conference matchup, and will celebrate Senior Day. Rhoden emphasized the need to return to their game plan and maintain patience, qualities he believes are key to their success, as detailed in a recent NCAA report on collegiate soccer strategies.
