Israeli Military Intercepts Second Gaza-Bound Flotilla, Detains Activists

The Israeli military intercepted a nine-boat flotilla attempting to breach the naval blockade of Gaza early today, detaining scores of activists from multiple countries, according to organizers and the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

The interception occurred approximately 120 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, with Israeli forces boarding the vessels – comprised of one large passenger ship and eight smaller sailboats – after an initial approach by fast-moving ships and aerial surveillance by helicopter. Activists aboard the vessels, including doctors, members of European Parliament, and national lawmakers from Turkey, Denmark, France, and Belgium, were reportedly broadcasting the interception live before communications were cut. The flotilla was carrying food and medical aid intended for hospitals in Gaza. This action follows a similar interception last week involving over 40 boats and nearly 450 activists participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that the 145 activists are in good health and are being transported to shore for processing and subsequent deportation, adding, “Another futile attempt to breach the legal naval blockade and enter a combat zone ended in nothing.” However, organizers condemned the detentions as “arbitrary and unlawful.” Turkey strongly criticized the interception, labeling it an “act of piracy” and a violation of international law, and announced diplomatic efforts to secure the release of its citizens. The ongoing blockade of Gaza, in place since 2007, has been a source of international contention, with critics arguing it constitutes collective punishment of the Palestinian population. The United Nations has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade.

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas resumed today in Sharm Al-Sheikh, Egypt, with the participation of representatives from the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict. Six activists from the previous flotilla – from Norway, Morocco, and Spain – remain detained in Israel as of yesterday, according to their legal representation. Officials stated that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
