Several prominent figures in Bulgarian football are facing serious health challenges, prompting an outpouring of support from within the football community. Former international Nikolai Iliev recently voiced his concern for three ex-teammates – Borislav Mikhailov, Lyuboslav Penev, and Petar Hubchev – all currently battling critically important illnesses. The news underscores the fragility faced by athletes even after retirement and has spurred fundraising efforts to assist with mounting medical expenses.

Former Bulgarian international Nikolai Iliev has expressed his concern and support for three ex-teammates currently battling serious health challenges.

Iliev learned of Borislav Mikhailov’s condition earlier, and received news about Lyuboslav Penev while traveling outside of Europe. He also extended his well wishes to Petar Hubchev, who is also facing a difficult health battle. “Every day I wake up and pray for both Bobi and Lyubo, and for Petar Hubchev,” Iliev said. “I hope they recover as quickly as possible. I know it’s a very difficult situation for them. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and praying to God that they will be okay. All three are strong characters and will fight through this.”

Borislav Mikhailov was hospitalized with a stroke in late November, with initial reports offering limited information about his condition. He was later reported to be conscious and responsive, with no apparent physical impairments. Lyuboslav Penev is currently undergoing treatment in Germany for a recurrence of cancer, requiring an estimated 300,000 euros for procedures and supportive care. Fundraising campaigns have been launched by his family, former clubs, and foundations to help cover the costs. Petar Hubchev’s battle with a serious illness was first revealed in the summer of 2023 by former national team captain Stilian Petrov, who subsequently organized a charity match in support of the veteran defender.
