Passengers Released From Cruise Ship Following Norovirus Outbreak in Bordeaux
Health authorities in Bordeaux have released passengers from the Ambition, a vessel operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, after confirming a norovirus outbreak on board. While more than 1,700 passengers and crew members were initially confined to the ship, officials have now permitted those showing no symptoms to disembark.
The outbreak involved 49 cases of gastrointestinal illness among the ship’s population, which consists of 1,187 guests and 514 crew members. According to French health officials, samples taken from the vessel confirmed the presence of norovirus, a highly contagious virus transmitted through the environment or from person to person. This incident underscores the persistent challenges of managing infectious diseases in high-density, confined environments like cruise ships, where rapid isolation is critical to preventing widespread transmission.
The Ambition arrived in Bordeaux on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, having departed from Belfast on Friday, May 8, and Liverpool on Saturday, May 9. Data from Ambassador Cruise Line indicated that the number of illness cases increased following the embarkation of guests in Liverpool. In response, the company implemented enhanced sanitation and prevention protocols in accordance with established public health procedures.
Amid the outbreak, the cruise line confirmed the death of a 92-year-old male passenger on Sunday, May 10. However, the operator stated that the individual had not reported any symptoms of gastrointestinal illness. The exact cause of death remains unknown pending a full coroner’s report.
French authorities also addressed a separate medical incident, noting that one individual was admitted to the Bordeaux University Hospital after a fall; that person’s condition is reported as stable and is unrelated to the virus. Officials clarified that there is “no reason” to link this specific outbreak to a hantavirus incident reported on a different cruise ship.
Norovirus, often referred to as viral gastroenteritis or a “stomach bug,” typically causes sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhea. While the illness can be severe, most patients recover within approximately two days.
Ambassador Cruise Line has announced that the vessel has been released by French health authorities to resume normal operations, including scheduled shore excursions. Despite the release, the company maintains that medical monitoring, isolation procedures, and reinforced hygiene protocols remain in effect across the ship to ensure passenger safety.
