Oldest Veteran in Ray County Honored at Veterans Day Ceremony

Richmond, Missouri – A ceremony held today recognized 98-year-old GC Myers Jr. as the oldest living veteran in Ray County, highlighting the sacrifices of those who served.

The annual Ray County Veterans Day Ceremony, hosted by the Griffith-Skiles American Legion Post 237 and Ray County Veterans, took place at the Ray County Courthouse and drew a large crowd of area residents. Myers served in the U.S. Navy from January 1945 to August 1946, seeing action in both the Philippines and Japan during and after World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal for his service.

“Honoring Myers added to the importance of the day,” said American Legion Post 237 Commander Jason Blakeman. Following his naval service, Myers worked as a telegrapher and station agent for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe (ATSF) Railway, serving in Hardin, Norborne, Carrollton, and Marceline. The dedication of communities to honoring veterans is vital as the number of WWII veterans continues to decline, preserving their stories for future generations. Blakeman detailed the process of recognizing Myers, adding that it was “special to see the community support.” Events like these underscore the importance of remembering and thanking those who have served in the armed forces, and the American Legion continues to support veterans and their families.

Officials stated they plan to continue honoring local veterans at future events throughout the year.
