Patriots Trade Safety Kyle Dugger to Steelers for Draft Picks

The New England Patriots agreed to trade safety Kyle Dugger to the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday, in exchange for a sixth-round and seventh-round draft pick, according to league sources.

Dugger, who was drafted by New England in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, had started 69 of his 81 career games but saw his role diminish this season, appearing on just 44 percent of the Patriots’ defensive snaps compared to 90 percent in 2024. The move comes after the Steelers suffered a knee injury to starting strong safety DeShon Elliott on Sunday, described by Steelers coach Mike Tomlin as a hyperextension.

The Steelers are hoping Dugger can fill the void left by Elliott, providing a physical presence against the run and coverage against tight ends – a role he previously excelled in, recording a career-high 109 tackles in 2023. This trade is part of a larger roster overhaul for the Patriots, led by coach Mike Vrabel, who has moved several veterans in recent days. The Patriots signed Dugger to a four-year, $58 million contract just 18 months ago, highlighting the team’s efforts to rebuild following the departure of Bill Belichick; you can find more information about the upcoming NFL Draft here.

New England now faces a need for safety depth, having recently cut Jabrill Peppers, and will rely on Craig Woodson and Jaylinn Hawkins as their current starters. The Patriots currently hold 10 picks in the 2026 draft, providing them with ample resources for further trades. The Steelers’ defensive struggles this season – currently ranked 32nd against the pass – underscore the urgency of addressing the safety position.

Team officials have indicated they expect Dugger to compete for immediate starting reps, and further roster moves are anticipated before the trade deadline next week.
