MADRID, Feb. 13, 2026 – Pharmacists play a critical role in curbing the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), according to a new report from the Consejo General de Colegios Farmacéuticos, the Spanish General Council of Pharmaceutical Colleges. The report highlights the accessibility, specialized training, and commitment to patient privacy that make pharmacists uniquely positioned within the healthcare system to address this growing public health concern.

The council emphasized the importance of pharmacists in providing health education, ensuring patients adhere to treatment plans, and identifying potential adverse reactions to medications. This multifaceted approach is particularly vital as STI rates continue to rise, necessitating a comprehensive response.

The report, released in advance of European Sexual Health Day on February 14, details the ways pharmacists contribute to sexual health promotion, as well as clinical aspects of STI treatment and prevention. It underscores the demand for a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to tackling the increasing prevalence of STIs, with pharmacists playing an “essential” role alongside other healthcare professionals.

Hospital pharmacists, for example, are responsible for dispensing and monitoring antiretroviral medications for patients with HIV. Community pharmacists, due to their accessibility, can recognize early warning signs of STIs – many of which are asymptomatic or dismissed by patients – and facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment. Early detection is key to breaking the chain of transmission.

The report also points to initiatives in several Spanish autonomous communities that include rapid HIV testing in community pharmacies, conducted by trained pharmacy staff. As of 2024, six communities were offering this service, involving 268 pharmacies, with pre- and post-test counseling provided to each patient. This expansion of testing access is a significant step in addressing the public health challenge.

PHARMACISTS PROMOTE SAFE SEX PRACTICES

Pharmacists also contribute to public health by educating patients about STI transmission, the risks associated with different sexual practices, and the importance of consistent condom use. They also promote behaviors that reduce the risk of infection and encourage vaccination where appropriate.

When a patient is diagnosed with an STI, pharmacists provide crucial information about the causative agent, mode of transmission, treatment regimen, and the need for sexual abstinence during treatment. This comprehensive counseling helps patients understand their condition and prevent further spread of infection.

The report aligns with Spain’s 2021-2030 Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of HIV and STIs, which recognizes the vital role of pharmacists in achieving national health goals. The findings could inform future public health strategies aimed at reducing STI transmission and improving sexual health outcomes.
