An international gathering focused on peace and reconciliation took place at Loyola University Chicago on March 7, 2026, receiving a message of support from Pope Leo XIV. The event, held as global conflicts continue to escalate, underscores the ongoing need for dialogue and understanding in a fractured world.

Pope Leo XIV expressed his satisfaction with the continuation of the “Bridge-Building Initiative” launched in 2022 by Pope Francis, bringing together university students, scholars, and leaders dedicated to fostering peace worldwide. “In a time increasingly marked by the scars of war and violence, your efforts are greatly needed,” he wrote in a message to the participants.

“First of all, true peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but a gift from God,” the Pope emphasized. “This peace is not what the world gives (cf. Jn 14:27), which is unfortunately often imposed by violence and deceit. Jesus tells us, as He told His apostles, not to be afraid, for He is with us always, until the end of time (cf. Mt 28:20). Christians are called to be collaborators with Christ in promoting peace. Jesus as well wants to share this gift with humanity today. He is with us when we strive to do everything possible to foster harmony in our families, communities, countries, and throughout the world.”

The message continued, stating that achieving global harmony requires the commitment of the international community to work for the common quality, transcending borders, religious traditions, and cultural differences. This, according to Pope Leo XIV, necessitates systematic interdisciplinary collaboration, uniting institutions, organizations, scientists, and leaders across various fields to achieve this goal. “Your efforts at this meeting are a concrete example of this being possible, and I hope they will bear abundant fruit,” he wrote.

the Pope stated that true harmony is rooted in reconciliation, a gift from God through His only Son, Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection. “Peace is a continuous journey – a journey of reconciliation with God, with ourselves, with others, and with creation.” The Holy Father reminded attendees of the importance of fostering a culture of reconciliation, and highlighted the power of prayer as a vital source of reconciliation. “When people of different religious traditions reach together to pray, such prayer has the power to change the course of history.”
