A recent nationwide food drive in Portugal collected 2,150 tons of food to aid families facing increasing economic pressures. While slightly down from last year’s total, teh campaign-coordinated by the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks Against Hunger-will assist approximately 380,000 people navigating food insecurity, particularly as the holiday season approaches. The effort reflects a continuing need for support, as food banks across the country distributed 27.5 million kilograms of food throughout 2024,valued at over 45 million euros.

Portuguese food banks collected 2,150 tons of food during a recent nationwide campaign, though donations were down approximately 60 tons compared to the previous year. The effort, which took place over the weekend, will provide assistance to roughly 380,000 people facing food insecurity across the country.

The collected food will be distributed starting next week to social service organizations, who will then deliver it to individuals and families in need. The campaign underscores the ongoing challenges many face in affording basic necessities, particularly during the holiday season.

“In everyday life, there are still people who need help to eat, especially at a time like Christmas,” a statement from the food bank said.

“Having family gathered around a table is a wish that each of us can help make a reality,” the organization added.

Last year’s campaign yielded 2,213 tons of food. Despite the slight decrease in donations this year, Isabel Jonet, president of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks Against Hunger, praised the continued generosity of the Portuguese people.

“We cannot fail to highlight the role of volunteers, people of all ages, with diverse political and religious beliefs who, participating side-by-side, contribute in a fraternal and supportive way to a more just and cohesive society,” Jonet said.

Approximately 42,000 volunteers participated in the weekend’s in-person drive, working at over 2,000 commercial locations throughout the country.

Donations can still be made through vouchers available at supermarkets or via the electronic platform at www.alimentestaideia.pt until December 7.

In 2024, the 21 Food Banks Against Hunger operating in Portugal distributed a total of 27.5 million kilograms of food – an average of 109 tons per working day – with a total estimated value exceeding 45 million euros.
