Mariners Stave Off Elimination, Defeat Tigers 3-2 in Game 2 of ALDS

Seattle Mariners stars Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh delivered clutch hits to secure a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers today, tying the American League Division Series at 1-1.

The Mariners, seeking their first-ever World Series appearance, faced a tense situation after Detroit rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning. Trailing 2-0 after solo home runs by Jorge Polanco in the fourth and sixth innings off Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, the Tigers knotted the score with a two-run double by Spencer Torkelson. However, Raleigh doubled to right field with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and Rodríguez followed with a game-winning double, driving in Raleigh. This win is crucial as the series shifts to Detroit for Games 3 and 4.

Reliever Matt Brash walked Gleyber Torres to start the eighth for Seattle, and a bobble by first baseman Josh Naylor allowed Detroit to load the runners on first and second. Despite the shaky inning, closer Andrés Muñoz pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the victory. Mariners manager Dan Wilson praised the resilience of his team, stating, “Those at-bats by Cal and Julio were tremendous. This was a bounce-back game for us. And they did just that. To lose a late lead like that and come right back and score a run was huge.”

Rodríguez, who finished fourth in AL MVP voting in 2023, downplayed any newfound “clutch” label, saying, “People are going to call me whatever they want to call me, but the biggest pride I take is helping the team win. If they want to say that I’m clutch, too, cool.” The Mariners entered the postseason as one of the American League’s hottest teams, and their ability to overcome adversity will be tested as they head to Detroit. The Mariners and Tigers will continue their best-of-five series with Game 3 on Monday in Detroit, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:37 PM ET.
