New data reveals a notable decline in motherboard sales-between 40% and 50% for major manufacturers-directly linked to the escalating cost of RAM, which has doubled or even quadrupled since October. This price volatility threatens to stifle upgrades and new PC builds as consumers delay purchases, signaling a potential slowdown extending to processor sales as well.
The PC hardware market is experiencing significant price volatility, particularly in the DDR5 memory sector. Recent reports indicate a rapid increase in RAM prices is directly impacting system builders and, most notably, motherboard sales. The situation signals a growing constriction within the hardware industry as manufacturers face unexpected sales declines.
RAM Prices Surge, Motherboard Sales Plummet
Data from Board Channels shows that major manufacturers including MSI, GIGABYTE, and ASUS have seen motherboard sales decline between 40% and 50% compared to the same period last year. This downturn is occurring during a period traditionally bolstered by promotional discounts.
The sharp increase in RAM prices, beginning in October, has reversed earlier expectations. DDR5 memory prices have doubled to quadrupled, causing consumers to postpone upgrade plans, a trend directly reflected in falling motherboard sales. The rising cost of memory is a key factor influencing the broader PC hardware market.
The complete transition to DDR5 is playing a significant role in this decline. New generation processors from both AMD and Intel now exclusively support DDR5 memory. As DDR4 motherboard options dwindle, and after DDR5 prices initially fell to reasonable levels earlier in the year, the shift to AM5 and LGA1851 platforms had accelerated.
However, recent price increases have brought that transition to a standstill. Consumers looking to upgrade to higher capacity RAM kits are unable to do so, and those planning new builds are waiting for prices to stabilize.
Following the sharp decline in motherboard sales, a similar downturn is anticipated in processor sales. Some manufacturers have begun offering bundled packages of motherboards and DDR5 kits, benefiting only new system builders.
Existing system owners are unable to take advantage of these promotions, leading to a growing number of potential buyers holding off on purchases. While the duration of the RAM price increase remains uncertain, current data suggests the industry is only at the beginning of this pressure.
