Indonesia has claimed its first medal at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, courtesy of cyclist Rendy Varera Sanjaya, who secured a silver medal in a thrilling downhill race.
Competing at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Rendy finished second with a time of 02:38.714, navigating a challenging and highly competitive course in the Men’s Mountain Bike (MTB) Downhill event.
The podium finish marked a strong start for the Indonesian contingent at the regional games, which showcase the best athletes across Southeast Asia. Rendy expressed his elation following the race.

“I’m relieved and incredibly grateful to have given my all and achieved this result today. This time is a personal best and the fastest I’ve been able to ride this course,” Rendy stated through the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI).
The gold medal was claimed by Thailand’s Methasit Boonsane, who dominated the field with a winning time of 02:37.856. Filipino rider John Derick Fart rounded out the podium in third place, posting a time of 02:43.676.
Looking ahead, Rendy is focused on refining his technique. “I need to continue training hard, focusing on reducing braking and strengthening my pedaling power,” he explained.
Bayu Priawan Djokosoetono, Chef de Mission for the Indonesian team at the 2025 SEA Games, praised Rendy’s achievement. He hopes the medal will inspire the entire Indonesian team as they compete throughout the multi-sport event.
“Alhamdulillah, today we’ve secured the first medal for the Indonesian team – a silver in the men’s downhill mountain bike, won by Rendy Varera,” Bayu said.
“Hopefully, this is a great start for the Indonesian team at the 2025 SEA Games and will inject spirit and motivation into our other athletes to win more medals,” he added.
Indonesia also has strong medal contenders in badminton, with both the women’s and men’s team events poised for success.
