Massive Police Raid in Rio de Janeiro Leaves Dozens Dead

A large-scale police operation targeting a major drug trafficking gang in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, resulted in the deaths of at least 60 suspects and four police officers today, officials reported.

Approximately 2,500 police and military personnel participated in the raid on the Complexo de Alemao and Penha favelas, focusing on the Red Command criminal organization. The operation, which included the use of helicopters and armored vehicles, led to the arrest of 81 suspects and the seizure of 93 rifles and over half a ton of drugs. Rio’s state Governor Claudio Castro described the raid as the largest in the city’s history, stating on X that 60 suspects were “neutralized” during the operation. The Red Command has been expanding its influence within Rio’s favelas in recent years, contributing to a long-standing struggle with organized crime in the region.

The violence prompted widespread disruption, with 46 schools closed across the affected neighborhoods and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro canceling evening classes. Suspected gang members reportedly blocked roads and commandeered at least 70 buses, causing significant damage, according to Rio Onibus. Human rights organizations, including the UN human rights body and Human Rights Watch, have called for investigations into the deaths, citing concerns over potential human rights violations. “The public prosecutor’s office must open its own investigations and clarify the circumstances of each death,” said César Muñoz, director of Human Rights Watch in Brazil.

Rio’s civil police stated on X that the “cowardly attacks by criminals against our agents will not go unpunished.” The operation follows a year-long investigation, and Governor Castro has called for increased federal support to combat crime, a sentiment echoed by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who announced an emergency meeting in Rio scheduled for tomorrow with Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining security and upholding human rights in Brazil’s complex urban landscape.
