New Mexico State Coach Emphasizes Discipline Ahead of Challenging Matchup
New Mexico State University’s football team will need a flawless execution of their game plan and a turnover-free performance to have a chance at victory in their upcoming game, according to head coach Doug Martin, who spoke today.
Martin, reflecting on past experiences coaching against formidable opponents like USC, Ohio State, and Michigan, stressed the importance of staying “dialed in” and keeping the game competitive through the first half. He recalled a close contest while at UNLV, noting a tie game against USC heading into the fourth quarter, and his first experience at New Mexico State playing LSU at night. “You can’t turn the ball over and then you’ve got to give yourself a chance in the second half,” Martin said.
The coach acknowledged the game would likely be considered an upset, but emphasized the fundamental nature of football. “All these guys grew up on the same fields, and we have the same task ahead of us,” he stated. A victory would be a significant boost for the Aggies’ program and potentially improve their bowl eligibility. For more on college football rankings, see the official NCAA website.
Martin expressed excitement for the challenge, adding, “So there’s been bigger upsets than that, but we’re excited for the challenge. I’m ready to go.” The team will continue preparations this week, focusing on minimizing errors and capitalizing on their strengths, as detailed in their offensive and defensive strategies.
Coaching staff indicated they will continue to assess player readiness throughout the week leading up to the game.
