New Documentary Explores Origins of Worldwide SantaCon Phenomenon

A new documentary, “SANTACON,” premiering today at DOC NYC, delves into the surprising origins of the annual event known for its boisterous gatherings of Santa Claus-clad participants in cities around the globe.

The film traces SantaCon’s roots back to 1996 in San Francisco, where it began as a prank orchestrated by a performance art group called the Cacophony Society. Director Seth Porges, previously known for documentaries like “Class Action Park,” discovered the event’s history through a friend who possessed early footage. “I was taken back in time to the 90s and this feeling of freedom and possibility and wonder that just permeated through the footage,” Porges said. The initial aim was simply “to show people something they’ve never seen before, and hopefully that’ll spark joy or creativity.”

As SantaCon spread internationally, fueled by the internet, it evolved from its whimsical beginnings into the often-chaotic spectacle it is today, particularly in New York City. Porges notes that the modern New York iteration bears little resemblance to the original intent, stating, “The modern New York SantaCon has nothing to do with the people who started it.” The documentary features the original creators confronting the current state of the event, observing how it has grown and changed over the decades. The event’s increasing scale has led to both celebration and controversy, raising questions about public order and responsible behavior during the holiday season. Porges hopes the film will encourage viewers to reflect on the importance of creativity and joy in a world that often stifles those sentiments. “How do you continue to go on with feelings of creativity and collaboration and joy and wonder in a world that seems designed to squash all of those feelings?” he asked. “SANTACON” will have additional screenings at DOC NYC on November 15 and November 20, and will also be available online from November 13-30; details can be found at docnyc.net.

The filmmakers anticipate the documentary will spark conversation about the evolution of counter-culture movements and the challenges of maintaining original artistic intent as events gain mainstream popularity.
