Shanid’s Response to the Criticism
Shanid noted that some individuals, “in the name of Islam,” were offering various opinions and comments, self-identifying as those who adhere to the “middle page” of the Quran. “I initially thought it wasn’t necessary to respond, but when the limits were crossed, I felt it wasn’t right to remain silent,” he said.
He then posed a series of questions to his critics:
1. Did we perform the Subhi prayer today?
2. Do we consistently observe all five daily prayers?
3. Do the women in our homes adhere to Islamic guidelines regarding modesty?
4. When we eat, do we inquire whether anyone in the surrounding 40 homes is going hungry?
5. Do the members of our household consistently perform the five daily prayers?
“We see not our responsibility to judge whether a person is a Muslim or not. We will all have to answer for that before our Lord,” Shanid wrote. “Criticizing and defaming others is not beneficial to our faith. On the day of reckoning, the acts of condemning others will not facilitate us in our salvation. Let us practice mutual respect and tolerance. First, let us understand what ‘gossip’ and ‘backbiting’ are and try to avoid them. May Allah guide us all on the right path.”
