Slovakia’s Olympic Hockey Team to Begin Training Preparations in Milan Next Month
Slovakia’s national hockey team will begin preparations for the Olympic tournament in Milan on February 11th, with the European contingent of the squad arriving roughly a week before their North American-based counterparts. This staggered arrival allows team management to establish a “taxi squad” for the initial training days.
Eight players are expected to join from North America: Samuel Hlavaj, Erik Černák, Martin Fehérváry, Šimon Nemec, Dalibor Dvorský, Martin Pospíšil, Pavol Regenda, and Juraj Slafkovský. The team is building towards a strong showing in the tournament, hoping to capitalize on the momentum of several key players currently performing in top leagues.
To ensure full training capacity, the team can bring eight replacement players – one for each of the eight North American players – consisting of one goaltender, three defensemen, and four forwards. These replacements will be selected from a pool of ten forwards, five defensemen, and two goaltenders.
Players currently in the AHL, including Martin Chromiak and Adam Sýkora, will not be part of the initial taxi squad in Milan, according to head coach Vladimír Országh. “Players from the AHL will not be in the taxi team. If they are nominated, which could happen only if someone gets injured, then we can add a player from the AHL. But they would arrive on February 8th,” Országh stated.
Goaltender Adam Gajan, who currently plays in the NCAA, may be released to join the team earlier than the NHL and AHL players. The remaining North American players are scheduled to arrive together on February 8th, alongside other players from NHL teams across various countries.
Slovakia has announced its roster for the Olympic hockey tournament in Milan. However, the composition of the coaching staff remained unknown until Miroslav Šatan revealed the details at a press conference on Wednesday, answering questions from reporters.
The taxi squad will consist solely of European-based players. The situation is slightly complicated by the fact that the Slovak Extraliga will not be pausing play during the Olympics.
“We have a group of players, I don’t want to unnecessarily name them, there is a chance that some of them will be involved in the Olympics. The replacements are in communication with us and know that they are replacements. It is possible that they will be asked to join us. This will mainly concern players from Czech clubs, but there are also other leagues,” said Miroslav Šatan, the team’s general manager and president of the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation.
“Slovak clubs have said they want to play during the break, which is strange to me, but they want to and are taking the risk that someone from the players could be pulled and be part of it. The Olympics and the national team have priority in this,” Šatan added.
Országh further explained how long the players from the taxi squad will be with the team. “They will probably join us for the first week, until the players from North America arrive. Who it will be, we will keep to ourselves, we will see how the situation develops. The roster can only be changed due to injuries,” Országh reiterated.
Once the North American players arrive, the players from the taxi squad will have to depart Milan.
Slovakia will play Finland, Italy, and Sweden in the group stage of the Olympic tournament. The team will be looking to build on recent international performances and make a deep run in the competition.
