ŠK Slovan bratislava claimed a dramatic late victory over MFK Zemplín Michalovce on Sunday, securing a 3-2 win and the top spot in the Niké league standings. The match, punctuated by two stoppage-time goals from Marko Tolič, came amid a challenging schedule and increasing frustration from Slovan coach Vladimír Weiss st. over the league’s refusal to accommodate a requested postponement, as the club juggles domestic and European commitments. Weiss’s post-match comments also highlighted a pointed critique of solidarity payments received by niké League clubs from UEFA.
BRATISLAVA – ŠK Slovan Bratislava now leads the Niké League standings.
Slovan Bratislava secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over MFK Zemplín Michalovce on Sunday, completing a late comeback with two goals in stoppage time. The win propels them to the top of the league table, two points ahead of Žilina.
“It was a difficult match. I thank the team for pulling it off at the end, with Marko Tolič deciding the game with two perfect goals. We were very tired. We made five changes to the lineup, and the players I expected to be fresh after Thursday didn’t perform as well.”
“Only Marko and Cesar Blackman stepped up after the break. After the red card, we pressed the opponent, which was natural. Even so, Michalovce had two or three good counterattacks and scored from a set piece where someone stepped out of the wall, which shouldn’t happen.”
“The positive thing is that we turned it around, and the morale is there. Even when things aren’t going our way, the more experienced players step up with fighting spirit and add quality, just like Marko, who helped us a lot. At the end, I was very happy – there aren’t many games in life where you’re losing 2-1 in added time and then win 3-2,” Slovan coach Vladimír Weiss st. told reporters after the match.
Slovan Sought to Reschedule Match on the Eastern Front
Slovan Bratislava faces a demanding schedule. They will play a rescheduled match in Ružomberok on Wednesday, followed by a game in Košice on Saturday, and a Conference League fixture in North Macedonia next Thursday.
“The players are completely exhausted and tired. We asked the league to postpone the match to Sunday, but they didn’t accommodate us. Everyone voted against us. Thank you all – that’s for earning each club 700,000 euros or so last year,” coach Weiss said sarcastically at the post-match press conference.
He was referring to the so-called solidarity payments from UEFA for Slovan Bratislava’s participation in the Champions League. Each club in the Niké League received 465,000 euros.
