Massive Traffic Surge Hits Bangkok as Songkran 2026 Concludes
Bangkok is facing a significant transportation challenge on April 15, 2026, as hundreds of thousands of travelers return to the capital following the Songkran holiday. Authorities are reporting a traffic crisis on inbound routes, with an estimated 570,000 vehicles expected to flood the city to mark the end of the festivities.

The surge has already led to heavy congestion on the Asia Highway, as residents travel back to the city to resume work after the extended break. This annual migration highlights the immense scale of movement across the country during its most prominent cultural celebration.
To manage the influx of passengers, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) began coordinating return trips on April 14, 2026. The SRT has emphasized strict safety measures to ensure operational efficiency and prevent passengers from being stranded at stations.
As part of these efforts to alleviate road congestion and meet high demand, the SRT has also announced the addition of four special train services specifically dedicated to transporting people back to Bangkok.
The widespread traffic density following the festival continues to impact major arteries leading into the city as the holiday period officially closes.
