No. 18 Oklahoma Defeats No. 14 Tennessee 33-27 in SEC Showdown

No. 18 Oklahoma defeated No. 14 Tennessee 33-27 yesterday, November 1st, in a hard-fought contest at Neyland Stadium, marking a significant win for the Sooners in their SEC campaign.

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer led the charge with 159 passing yards and 80 rushing yards, including a game-sealing touchdown. The Sooner defense proved pivotal, forcing three turnovers, including a 71-yard fumble return for a touchdown by R Mason Thomas – the longest in Oklahoma history. Tate Sandell contributed four field goals, two from 55 yards, tying a Neyland Stadium record. “Our guys matched (Tennessee’s) physicality, and then some,” said Oklahoma coach Brent Venables. “The pile constantly went in our direction. All those piles that fall forward add up to a lot.”

The game saw several lead changes, with Tennessee briefly taking a 17-16 advantage in the third quarter. However, Oklahoma responded with a touchdown run by Xavier Robinson and another successful field goal from Sandell. Interceptions by Peyton Bowen and Robert Spears-Jennings in the first half helped establish a 16-10 halftime lead for the Sooners. This victory is Oklahoma’s first road win against a ranked opponent since 2019 and boosts their chances in the competitive Southeastern Conference.

Following a bye week, Oklahoma will travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama on November 15th, with kickoff time and television coverage to be announced. The Sooners will look to carry this momentum into another challenging SEC matchup against a perennial powerhouse like Alabama.
