Stanford Fined $50,000 by ACC for Field Rush After Florida State Game
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) today fined Stanford University $50,000 for violating its event security policy following a field rush by fans after the Cardinal’s 20-13 victory over Florida State on Saturday.
According to the ACC, the violation occurred when spectators entered the field of play before Florida State players and officials had fully departed. “The conference’s event security policy is designed to protect the safety and well-being of all student-athletes, coaches, officials and fans,” the ACC stated in a release. This is Stanford’s first offense under the policy, which escalates fines to $100,000 for a second violation and $200,000 for each subsequent occurrence within a rolling two-year period.
The incident comes as concerns about fan behavior and field security are increasing across college football. All revenue generated from these fines is directed to the Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship Fund, providing financial support for ACC student-athletes pursuing graduate studies – you can learn more about the fund here. The loss dropped Florida State to 0-4 in ACC play and 3-4 overall, extending their conference losing streak to nine consecutive games; you can find the latest college football scores on ESPN.
ACC officials indicated they will continue to enforce the event security policy to ensure a safe environment for all participants and attendees at conference events.
