Valve’s steam platform hit a new milestone earlier this month, surpassing 42 million concurrent users on January 5th. The surge in activity underscores the continued popularity of PC gaming, a market estimated to be worth over $40 billion globally in 2023, and highlights Steam‘s dominant position despite increasing competition from platforms like Roblox. While Steam saw a doubling of users since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company is also signaling further expansion into the gaming hardware space, directly challenging industry leaders Sony and Microsoft.
Steam, Valve’s popular PC gaming platform, reached a new peak in concurrent users on January 5th, according to data from SteamDB, an independent service tracking publicly available Steam statistics.
Around 3:28 PM PST on January 5th, Steam surpassed 42 million concurrent users. While a significant number were logged into the service, approximately 20 million were actively playing games.

The surge in Steam’s user base represents a doubling since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, as more people turned to gaming for entertainment during lockdowns. Despite this growth, Steam still trails behind Roblox in total user numbers, with Roblox reaching 45 million concurrent players.
