Howard Stern in Contract Talks with SiriusXM, Eyes Potential Ownership Stake

Talk show host Howard Stern is currently in negotiations with SiriusXM regarding a contract extension, with the possibility of taking an ownership position within the company.

Stern revealed the ongoing discussions during an interview with Andy Cohen, noting his pride in contributing to the growth of SiriusXM from approximately 200,000 subscribers in 2006 to the robust platform it is today. “I’m talking to Sirius right now about extending in some way, and if that works out great, and if it doesn’t, great,” Stern said. He further expressed a desire to “take ownership” if a deal is reached, referencing his existing stock holdings. The outcome of these negotiations could significantly impact the future of satellite radio programming.

The discussions also involve Stern’s extensive show archive, which SiriusXM President Scott Greenstein stated in 2024 would remain the property of the company for years even if Stern retired. Stern declined to elaborate on the specifics of the archive’s role in the negotiations, stating, “One of the things that I will tell you is that when I make a deal with Sirius, they don’t want me talking about it, and I don’t want them talking about it, but they do consider that material very important.” Rumors of a potential departure surfaced this summer due to Stern’s high salary – estimated at $100 million annually – and reduced broadcasting schedule, but SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz expressed confidence yesterday that they would “get to the right place.” You can find more information about SiriusXM’s programming on their official website.

Stern also addressed recent speculation about being labeled “too woke” and clarified his past relationship with Donald Trump, recalling attending each other’s weddings and a subsequent falling out after Stern declined to introduce Trump at the Republican National Convention due to his support for Hillary Clinton. Stern emphasized the need for his show to continually evolve, reflecting on his early career focus on breaking taboos. He stated, “The show has to constantly change and evolve.”

Negotiations are expected to continue through the end of the year, as Stern’s current five-year deal expires at the end of 2025.
