Rejected ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Script Revealed: Soderbergh Details Disney Decision

Director Steven Soderbergh revealed today that a completed script for a sequel focusing on Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) was rejected by Disney prior to the release of The Rise of Skywalker, adding another layer to the ongoing discussion about the direction of the franchise.

Soderbergh, speaking publicly about the project for the first time, stated the script – developed with actor Adam Driver – had been greenlit before Disney executives ultimately reversed course. Driver himself recently confirmed the project’s demise, noting that Lucasfilm had initially expressed enthusiasm for the idea. “They loved the idea,” Driver said, according to reports. The film, titled ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo,’ would have explored the character’s journey following the events of The Last Jedi.

Yesterday, fans took their frustration with the decision to new heights, commissioning a plane to fly over Disney Studios in Burbank, California, trailing a banner reading “Save The Hunt for Ben Solo.” This demonstration underscores the passionate fanbase invested in seeing further development of Kylo Ren’s story. The rejected sequel has sparked debate among fans about creative control and the future of the Star Wars universe.

The revelation comes as Lucasfilm continues to develop new projects within the Star Wars galaxy, including the ongoing work on the High Republic era and future cinematic installments. Representatives for Disney have not yet issued a formal response to the recent surge in attention surrounding the abandoned project, but the company has previously stated its commitment to exploring diverse narratives within the franchise.
