Belgian lawyer Vic Van Aelst, best known for his role in the high-profile parachute murder case, has died at the age of 78. His passing was announced by his law firm, Nevisis Advocaten, which described him as both an example and an inspiration whose legacy will continue within the office.
Van Aelst gained widespread recognition for defending Els Clottemans in the assizes trial surrounding the parachute murder, a case that captured national attention. Colleagues remembered him for his compelling courtroom presence — blending empathy with sharpness, and always maintaining a human touch, often laced with his signature humor.
Beyond the courtroom, Van Aelst was actively involved in politics. He was a member of the Volksunie in the 1970s and later joined the N-VA in 2011. From 2013 to 2018, he served as a municipal councilor in Antwerp. He retired from legal practice in 2016.
He is survived by his wife, two children, and two stepchildren.
