The animated film “Super Mario Galaxy,” based on the beloved Nintendo video game franchise, has officially moved from theaters to streaming platforms, following a successful run that grossed over 780 million, according to reports.

The film, a follow-up to 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” became available for digital purchase on October 2, 2025, as part of Nintendo’s celebration of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary. The release comes after the game itself, an enhanced port of the original Wii title, was released on the Nintendo Switch on the same date, according to MarioWiki.

While specific details regarding streaming platforms were not immediately available, 20Minutos reported that the film will be available on a streaming platform in Spain soon.

The release of “Super Mario Galaxy” in both film and game formats continues Nintendo’s strategy of leveraging its iconic intellectual property across multiple entertainment mediums. The game is playable on the Nintendo Switch and is also compatible with a free update for the Nintendo Switch 2. Players can take on the roles of Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Rosalina, and other familiar characters, as detailed in the game’s description on Nintendo’s website.

Despite the film’s success, “Super Mario Galaxy” faced some criticism. 20Minutos reported that some critics found the film didn’t quite reach the heights of its source material.

The film’s box office performance, while strong, saw it “lose its star” in terms of box office dominance, according to El Universal, though it still outperformed many other releases.
