Flight Nurse Honored with Final Flight Following Sacramento Helicopter Crash

A final flight and community procession honored the life of Suzie Smith, a 67-year-old flight nurse who died days after a medical helicopter crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento, highlighting the risks faced by those providing critical air medical services.

The crash occurred on October 6th, and Smith passed away at UC Davis Medical Center, despite the swift response of emergency personnel. Two other crew members survived with critical injuries, and officials confirmed no ground injuries occurred; the helicopter had safely delivered a patient prior to the incident. Yesterday, REACH Air Medical Services organized a special procession with Smith’s family, departing Sacramento at approximately 1 p.m. and landing in Red Bluff around 2 p.m.

From Red Bluff, Smith was transported by ground ambulance to Palo Cedro, accompanied by family and a procession of emergency and law enforcement vehicles. Residents lined roadways and overpasses, displaying flags, signs, and flowers in tribute to the dedicated nurse. Her son, Gabriel Smith, shared a heartfelt message, stating, “It’s with a heavy heart that I write this message…she knew every second was precious and chose to spend that time helping others and building communities.” He encouraged others to “spread kindness, love your neighbors, volunteer, lift up those in need, and make every second count.” You can find more information about air medical safety standards at the Federal Aviation Administration.

The family is establishing a memorial foundation, “Our Angel That Flies,” to support nursing scholarships, mission work, and community outreach, reflecting Smith’s passions. A public Celebration of Life is being planned to allow the community to further honor her memory. REACH Air Medical Services has expressed its deep sorrow and support for Smith’s family and colleagues.

Officials stated that the investigation into the cause of the helicopter crash is ongoing.
