Syria is currently facing a rise in acute respiratory illnesses, prompting concern among health officials and the public. While the cause is still under examination, medical experts believe seasonal influenza A (H3N2) is the primary driver, though co-infection with the “Nimbus” COVID-19 variant is also being observed, particularly resulting in prolonged recovery times for children. This report details the current situation, alongside expert advice on bolstering immunity through lifestyle adjustments and natural remedies.

Syria is experiencing a recent surge in acute respiratory illnesses, with individuals reporting severe symptoms affecting the respiratory system. The increase has prompted questions about the cause of these infections, as official and medical opinions differ on whether they are due to seasonal influenza or a new variant of the coronavirus.

Dr. Mohammad Yousef Hassan, a pulmonologist and professor at the Faculty of Human Medicine at Hama University, explained that the cases are primarily caused by seasonal influenza A (H3N2). This strain is spreading rapidly among nursery school students, schoolchildren, and in crowded settings.

According to the specialist, cases peaked last week, and the infection curve is now flattening, suggesting a potential decline in cases over the next two weeks. He attributed instances of relapse or prolonged recovery, particularly in children, to co-infection with the coronavirus, which remains present but generally causes mild cases in Syria and globally. The currently dominant COVID-19 variant is “Nimbus.”

Boosting Immunity Naturally

Nour Kahwaji, a therapeutic nutritionist and complementary medicine specialist, emphasized the importance of strengthening immunity during this period. She noted that boosting the immune system isn’t a single action, but rather a comprehensive lifestyle approach. This is particularly important as a strong immune system is key to fighting off respiratory infections and reducing their severity.

Kahwaji highlighted several key steps:

  • Adequate Sleep: Getting 7-9 hours of sleep daily is crucial for immune function.
  • Hydration: Drinking warm water, herbal teas, and soups helps the body resist viruses.
  • Stress Reduction: Chronic stress weakens the immune system.
  • Sun Exposure: 15-20 minutes of daily sunlight supports vitamin D levels.

Herbs and Natural Drinks to Strengthen Immunity

  • Ginger: An anti-inflammatory that soothes sore throats and boosts immunity.
  • Wild Thyme: Beneficial for the respiratory system and coughs.
  • Chamomile: Calms the body and promotes sleep.
  • Cinnamon with Honey: Enhances the body’s resistance and reduces inflammation.
  • Lemon with Honey: Rich in vitamin C and helpful at the onset of symptoms.
  • Clove Brew: Antibacterial and supports immunity.

Beneficial Natural Juices

The specialist recommends several natural juices that are particularly important for influenza cases and strengthening the body’s immunity, advising that they be consumed fresh and without added sugar:

• Orange, carrot, and lemon juice.
• Pomegranate juice.
• Beet juice.
• Pineapple juice (anti-inflammatory).

Foods That Boost Immunity

  • Garlic and Onions.
  • Leafy Greens (spinach, arugula).
  • Fruits Rich in Vitamin C (kiwi, strawberries, citrus fruits).
  • Natural Honey.
  • Nuts with Dried Figs (especially walnuts and almonds); soaking figs in olive oil or warm water overnight and eating them on an empty stomach is also recommended.
  • Natural Yogurt (to support beneficial bacteria).

Essential Natural Vitamins for Immunity

  • Vitamin C: Strengthens immunity and shortens the duration of illness.
  • Vitamin D: Very important for resisting viruses.
  • Zinc: Supports the immune system and speeds up recovery.
  • Vitamin A: Maintains the health of mucous membranes.

These vitamins can be obtained through food or, if necessary, through natural supplements, according to Kahwaji.

How to Relieve Symptoms Naturally

  • Complete Rest.
  • Increased Intake of Warm Fluids.
  • Steam Inhalation with Thyme or Chamomile.
  • Gargling with Warm Salt Water.
  • Keeping the Body Warm and Avoiding Cold Air.
  • Eating Light, Easily Digestible Foods.

The body is capable of resisting most common viruses without medication if provided with rest, proper nutrition, and natural drinks, Kahwaji concluded, emphasizing that strengthening immunity is a lifestyle, not a temporary treatment.
