Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia suffered an injury during Wednesday’s Champions League match against Newcastle, forcing him off the pitch in the 82nd minute. Wojciech Szczęsny replaced Garcia between the posts as Barcelona cruised to a 7-2 victory.

The Spanish shot-stopper sustained the injury during play, and medical staff immediately signaled for a substitution. Barcelona was already comfortably ahead 7-2 when Garcia left the field.

Szczęsny had previously filled in for Garcia earlier this season when the starter was sidelined for over a month with an injury. Garcia’s last appearance for FC Barcelona prior to Wednesday was on November 9th, in a 4-2 La Liga win against Celta Vigo.

The match against Newcastle marked Szczęsny’s fourth Champions League appearance this season. His previous appearance in the competition was on November 5th, in a 3-3 draw against Club Brugge.

After entering the match, Szczęsny was called upon to make one save, but largely remained untested as Barcelona secured a dominant 7-2 win and advanced to the quarter-finals. There, they will face the winner of the Tottenham Hotspur – Atletico Madrid tie. The convincing victory propels Barcelona forward in the tournament as they aim for a deep run.
