Taipei Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau Chief Lo Chun-hong told Bloomberg that they have received dozens of security threats since the attack occurred, leading to the bolstered security presence at transportation centers, New Year’s Eve celebrations, and other large-scale events.
The attack was carried out on Friday by a 27-year-old man, identified as Chang Wen, who used smoke bombs and a knife to target individuals at a main train station and a nearby shopping area.
Police stated that the attacker died after falling from a building, and that the incident resulted in eleven injuries in addition to the three fatalities.
Taiwan’s Premier Chou Jung-tai said the suspect had a criminal record and outstanding arrest warrants, and that his home had previously been searched.
Violent crime is rare in Taiwan; the last similar incident occurred in 2014 when a man stabbed four people on the metro. This latest attack underscores the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining public safety even in typically secure environments.
