KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan – Right-handed pitcher Lin Yuan-yu blazed onto the scene Tuesday, hitting 148 kilometers per hour – the fastest pitch thrown by any pitcher in the current tournament – during a dominant one-inning performance against Japan’s corporate league team. He retired the side in order, continuing a strong showing in the Asia Winter Baseball League.
The 23-year-old has made five appearances in the winter league, earning three holds with a sparkling 1.93 ERA. His velocity reached 151 kph on December 20th against the Korean Baseball Organization’s team, tying his career high and making him the fastest Taiwanese pitcher in this year’s competition. He ranks fourth overall in the league, trailing only Japan’s Hiroki Mizusawa (156 kph), Hayato Nakajima (153 kph), and Kenji Inouye (152 kph).
Taiwanese team manager Lin Zhen-xian praised Lin Yuan-yu’s performance in the winter league, stating, “He’s been excellent. He has good velocity, solid control, and can overpower hitters.” Despite his impressive showing, Lin Yuan-yu was left off the 60-man roster by his club team, the Uni-Lions. Lin Zhen-xian acknowledged the decision, saying, “Every team has its own considerations, and it’s difficult for us to comment. Only Uni-Lions knows the specific reasons, but from our perspective, we think he’s a good player.”
Team pitching coach Xiao Ren-wen revealed he questioned Lin Yuan-yu about being excluded from the 60-man roster. “He told me the roster was full, and the team contacted him to say they would re-sign him. There’s not much else he could do. It’s true that many talented players are left off the 60-man roster and are verbally assured they’ll be retained.”
