NÆRØYSUND: A tanker truck overturned Saturday afternoon, spilling gasoline near the town of Nærøysund, Norway, prompting a safety perimeter and road closure.
Authorities responded to reports of a gasoline odor at approximately 4:35 p.m. local time.
“A 100-meter safety zone has been established. The fire department is on scene. The driver of the tanker truck appears to be unharmed,” said operations leader Wenche Johnsen of the Trøndelag police district.
Police reported a breach in the tanker’s tank, with gasoline leaking into a nearby ditch.
As of Saturday evening, authorities stated there was no immediate need to evacuate residents.
The incident occurred near Leirvika, on the stretch of road between Kolvereid and Foldereid, which is currently closed to all traffic.
Police announced plans to begin emptying the tanker truck at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
“Recovery services are prepared with two heavy-duty tow trucks once the tank is emptied. The duration of this process is currently unknown,” police stated at 10:10 a.m. Saturday.
