Ghent University Fast-Tracks Exit From Israeli Projects Amid Student Protests
Ghent University (UGent) has announced It’s accelerating its withdrawal from its final remaining projects with Israel, moving to terminate these partnerships simultaneously. University officials stated that the institution is now “tackling them all at once” to conclude its remaining ties.

The decision follows a period of heightened tension and pressure from pro-Palestinian activists on campus. Despite the university’s commitment to a faster exit, some activists have expressed disappointment, stating that they had expected more from the institution.
In an effort to manage the situation, the university administration has temporarily permitted the occupation of campus facilities following discussions with the protesters. This uneasy truce comes as the university attempts to balance campus stability with the demands of the activist groups.
Rector De Sutter has defended the university’s specific approach to the Israeli boycott. As part of the ongoing resolution process, the university is scheduled to meet with activists on Monday, May 11, 2026, to further discuss the university’s position and the activists’ demands.
The developments at UGent highlight the increasing pressure on academic institutions to align their international research and partnerships with the political convictions of their student populations.
