Security Breach Foiled as Armed Imposter Infiltrates Abelardo de la Espriella’s Campaign Event
A potential security threat against right-wing presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella was neutralized on May 13, 2026, after his security detail identified an armed man posing as a member of his protection team.
The incident occurred in Envigado, Antioquia, while De la Espriella was conducting territorial campaign activities. According to a statement from the citizen movement Defensores de la Patria, the candidate’s security team detected and neutralized a “grave irregular situation” involving an individual attempting to infiltrate the inner circle of the campaign’s protection scheme.
The intruder, who insisted he was part of the security detail, was found to be performing intelligence gathering at the venue. He was not authorized by the official campaign protection team and was not a member of the security advance. Upon his detention, officials discovered the man was in possession of weapons, binoculars, and various electronic devices.
Further investigation revealed that the imposter had captured audiovisual records of the event site, including the stage prepared for the candidate’s presentation, strategic access points to the venue, and detailed logistical movements related to the event.
In the wake of the breach, the campaign for De la Espriella has demanded “full and effective guarantees” to ensure the safety of the democratic process. The event underscores the heightened security risks surrounding high-profile political figures during election cycles in the region.
However, the National Intelligence Directorate (DNI) has since disputed the narrative of a coordinated assassination plot, denying the claims and demanding that evidence be provided to support the allegation of a planned attack on the candidate’s life.
Reports regarding the detained individual’s background suggest he may have had prior connections to regional political figures, with some evidence indicating he had previously been photographed with leaders in the Antioquia region.
